ASTM 36 is an American standard carbon structural plate, which implements the standard ASTM A36/A36M-03a. This standard is suitable for riveting, bolting and welding structures for bridges and buildings, as well as structural steel quality carbon steel sections and steel plates for general purposes. And bar steel.
Chemical Composition
C: ≤0.25, Si≤0.40, Mn: ≤0.80-1.20, P≤0.04, S: ≤0.05, Cu≥0.20 (when copper-containing steel is specified).
Mechanical properties
Yield strength: ≥250.
Tensile strength: 400-550.
Elongation: ≥20.
Comparison of chemical composition and mechanical properties of A36, SS400 and Q235
1. Different standard setters
A36 is the material of the American standard ASME standard (steel A36, SS400 and Q235 chemical composition and mechanical properties are equivalent to ASTM specifications), SS400 is the material of the Japanese standard JIS G3101 (rolled steel for general structure), and Q235 is the national standard GB700 material.
GB700:Q235
JIS G3101:SS400
ASME:A36
2. Different mechanical properties of materials
The tensile strength of A36 is 58~80 Ksi (about 400~550MPa), and the yield strength is 36 Ksi (about 250MPa);
The tensile strength of Q235 is 370~500 MPa, and the yield strength is 235MPa;
The tensile strength of SS400 is 400~510 MPa, and the yield strength is 245MPa
(The mechanical properties of SS400 and Q235 are based on the steel plate thickness less than 16mm as an example.)
It can be seen from the above data that the materials of ASME standard A36 and Chinese standard Q235 are named after the yield strength of the material, while SS400 is named after the tensile strength of the material. From the analysis of the mechanical properties of the material, A36 is equivalent to SS400, while Q235 material is worse.
3, Substitute for A36, SS400 and Q235
Although the mechanical properties of Q235 material are worse than those of A36 and SS40 steel plates A36, SS400, and Q235 in terms of chemical composition and mechanical properties, in actual operation, as long as the owner does not explicitly require them, the three materials can often be substituted for each other.

Physical Property Analyze:
Qualified A36 steel product shall have ultimate tensile strengths ranges from 58,000 to 79,800 psi. It is not a exact number for it is affected by its chemical composition and production method. In tensile testing, ASTM A36 steel bar can elongate to around 20% of its original length. It also shows excellent impact strength at room temperature.
